Welcome to season two of Soil and Stars

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Soil and Stars, a podcast exploring our interconnectedness and unique roles within the web of life. I'm your host, Emily Hall, and I invite you to awaken your mind, open your heart, and remember that you are made of soil and stars. Hello, hello, everyone. Welcome back to Soil and Stars, a podcast where we awaken, enchant, and deepen our relationship with the living world and cosmos. I am your resident mystic and green witch and herbalist and astrologer, and also the host of the show, Emily Hall. And I am so excited because we are so back, baby! This episode is lucky number 13 of Soil and Stars, and it is the very first episode of season two. So welcome back, or welcome here for the first time. If this is your first time tuning in, I am so, so grateful for your presence, for your support, and for you listening to Soil and Stars. I've said it many times and I'll keep saying it again. This podcast is such an aligned form of creative expression for me. I really am in my element when I'm planning and creating and interviewing and speaking and yapping. And yes, it just brings me so much joy. And oh my goodness, do I have an amazing season for you, for me, for all of us. I, you know, as we practice our craft, as we practice our creative outlets, the more repetitions, the more we do it, the better we get. And I absolutely love season one. And if you have not tuned in, or if you want to get a little refreshed, go back into the archive. There are 12 incredible episodes to tune in, some phenomenal interviews with really inspiring guests. So I highly encourage you to listen back in the archives. And I'm just excited because I'm just getting better at doing this, at interviewing, at hosting, and at really pulling together like a really strong vision for a season. As you may know, or if you're just tuning in, I am a highly cyclical and seasonal being and a big thread of soil and stars as a vision, as a body of work, as a creative expression, as a business is guiding and supporting myself and my community, all of you who are listening, to unlearn hustle and grind culture and to opt out of capitalist hustle and grind culture and to opt into cyclical seasonal rhythms and living as much as we can so that we can find this ease and this flow and we can find a more flowing way of being that honors our body's need for rest and reflection and wintering and solitude. We can't be going, going, going, outputting, outputting, outputting all the time. And so that is why I do seasons of this podcast. Because at this moment in time, I am a one-woman show. I am the creative director, I am the producer, I am the editor, and it brings me so much joy to do that. And in the future, as I grow this show, as more people are supporting, um, I would really love if you could become a patron. If you've been enjoying the show, if you've been receiving nourishment and inspiration, you can help feed me and engage in some reciprocity and in a couple of ways. One of that would be uh becoming a patron through the Soil and Stars newsletter. You can become a patron for $5 a month or $50 a year. And you can do that on Substack at ofSoilandstars.substack.com. You can also engage in reciprocity by spreading the word, by sharing this podcast with your networks, with your friends, with your family, with your community and your audience. Word of mouth is truly the best, most generative way to support creators like myself. So please help spread the word. Text this episode to your friend, link it in your newsletter, post it on your Instagram stories, whatever aligned way uh is most aligned for sharing. That is how you can engage in reciprocity if you are feeling fed and nourished and inspired by this uh podcast. And so back to the seasons. Because I'm a one-woman show, I do seasons and I'm very real with my capacity and the energy that I have to give. And also that, again, I'm highly cyclical. And after a season of high creativity and high creative expression and high creative output, I have to go into my cave. I have to be a little bit silent. I can't be posting online, I can't be recording podcast episodes. I need time to rest. I need time to just be, and that refills my creative well and allows me to be highly creative in my next season of expression. And so I have been doing just that, dear listener. If you tuned into season one, we wrapped up just before the spring equinox. And so I took all of the spring to rest and to let the ideas come to me for season two. Instead of pushing and forcing, I let the muse come to me. I let her guide me and inspire me. And in about late April is when I knew it was time to start putting all of the ducks in a row and start sowing the seeds for this season to come into being.

Venus as our guiding light for this season

SPEAKER_00

And so I am so excited to welcome you to season two. And if you recall from season one, my intention is to have a guiding light for each season. There's going to be this overarching theme, or there will be a being or a celestial body, or just a muse. Maybe let's think of it as a muse. There's a muse for each season. And this season I really got to go deep with this muse, this beloved muse of mine and beloved muse of so many, and perhaps one of your beloved muses as well, dear listener. And so the guiding light for season two is Venus. Oh, I love her so much. I am recording this episode on Venus Day. And every episode in this season, so this season will be 12 episodes, and they will be released weekly on Wednesdays from now, which is, I believe, July 8th, till just after the fall equinox is when we'll wrap. I believe the date is September 23rd. It'll be that Wednesday that comes a day or two after the equinox. So this season, these 12 episodes will be released, and every episode is an offering to Venus. And every episode is an exploration of her. Together, we are going to reveal the many facets, the many faces, the many incredible dimensions of Venus. And this episode, we will be beginning with who is Venus and why Venus. Why am I devoting a whole season of this podcast to her? Why do I think we all need a little bit more Venus in our life? And really, I hope that this season just serves as a lovely place each week to land and feel inspired and feel connected with our guests and feel connected with me and connected with Venus and connected with this beautiful web of life that we are all a part of. And so thank you, dear listener, for being here. Thank you for tuning in. And so this episode to begin is a solo episode. Like I mentioned, we're going to be talking about who is Venus because she is our guiding light.

Heart centering practice

SPEAKER_00

So let us begin there. So why don't you relax? Or if you're on a walk or driving, just connect with your heart space. I invite you to just take, if you are in a safe place to do so, take a deep breath in through your nose and sigh out through your mouth. And if you can, place your hands on your heart and feel the beat of your heart beneath your palm. Venus is our heart. And whenever we want to connect with Venus, all we have to do is connect with our heart. So I invite you to breathe deeply into your chest and feel that breath and that beat of life pouring through your heart and feel your heart space by opening. Opening to receive connection, opening to give love and reciprocity and generosity, and opening to receive, because Venus is all about reciprocity and receiving as much as we

Venus as planet and Earth’s twin

SPEAKER_00

give. And so let's begin here. From our heart space, let's begin to explore who is Venus. So you may know that one of the many hats that I wear is astrologer. And I did have an astrology business back in 2023 and early 2024. I am no longer a practicing astrologer in the traditional sense, but astrology has been integrated as one of my modalities, one of my worldviews, and one of the tools that I have in my tool belt. And so, of course, for me, my introduction to Venus is as the planet. And so let's begin there. Venus is the second planet from the sun in our beautiful solar system that revolves around our gorgeous star, the sun in the center. And Venus is known as Earth's twin. She's also known as our sister planet. And how cute is that? When I was doing some research, this is what I found. I was like, okay, astronomers are referring to Venus as our sister planet and our twin. And like, how cute, how beautiful. So I really like to think of this deep kinship between Venus and the Earth. And the reason that she's called Earth's twin is because they are similar in size, and the fact that scientists believe Earth and Venus were formed around the same time from similar building blocks. And so the Earth was formed about four and a half billion years ago, a very ancient, amazing, magnificent being and organism, and Venus was formed around the same time. And so Venus and the Earth are about four and a half billion years old, and they orbit around the sun. And there's this deep ancient connection, four and a half billion years of relationship between the earth and Venus and the Sun. And then each of those planets having their own unique relationship with the sun. And so if we just sit with that for a moment, our human brains have a really I have a deeply hard time conceptualizing four and a half billion years. But that is deep, deep, deep time. Humans have been on Earth for roughly 300,000 years. And insects and plants have been on Earth for like a hundred million years plus. Shout out to my friend Farmer Rox, who is writing an amazing series on Substack about insects and is really talking about this evolutionary history of insects and plants. And so I'll link Rox's Substack in the show notes. So um, but I'm just thinking about, I bring this up because of this lens of deep time and really sinking into how old and ancient the Earth and Venus are, and then kind of putting that into perspective into how old insects and plants are. Again, they've been here for well over a hundred million years. And then to human time, humans have been here for roughly 300,000 years. And so we really are these young little brothers and sisters and nibblings of these much older beings.

The ancient dance of Venus, Earth, and the Sun

SPEAKER_00

And so if we just think for a moment, this beautiful moving solar system, right? The sun is in is in the center of the solar system, giving life, giving energy, and has a huge gravitational pull on all of the planets. And so the Earth and Venus have been in orbit dancing around the sun for billions of years. And if you've heard me speak about this before, I often talk about astrological transits, which is simply a way of describing this cycle, this orbit that all of the planets are in constant movement and revolution around the sun. But I think of that energetically as a river. I think of it as a flowing, rushing river, right? Astronomers, astrologers, we can view these cycles are ancient. Billions of years, Venus and the Earth have been orbiting the sun. And just think about energetically the imprint that leaves in the cosmos, that ripples out to here, um, to us here on the earthly plane. So I always like to think about the relationship we have with the planets who are much older and wiser and sentient beings, and their cycle around the sun as ancient, and they have caused this huge current that is billions of years old that we have a relationship with. And we can flow with that current, and we can relate to that current through simply noticing, becoming aware of Venus, gazing at her in the sky, whether she is in her morning star or her evening star phase, and starting to relate to these transits and to these cycles and noticing how they show up in our mundane lives here on Earth. All right, so that is Venus, the planet, right? So that is one face of her, of course. And when we view her from our perspective on Earth, she is the brightest celestial body in the sky after the sun and after the moon. And so at the time of this recording, dear listener, and if you are listening, sometime between July 2026 and about October 2026, Venus is in her evening star phase. This is a phase in her cycle, which means that she is visible as the brightest star in the sky just after sunset. And she is getting higher and higher in the sky. Basically, from July until August, she is about to reach her point sometime in August of greatest elongation. And so my teacher on all things Venus Cycle is Palace K. Augustine. And Palace has so many resources and teachings about the Venus cycle. And so if you want to nerd out and get more of that technical foundation and understanding, Palace K. Augustine is my number one recommendation. And I will link their work here. But I have learned about the Venus cycle all through Palace. And so they've written and taught about the greatest elongation, which just means that is when the V when Venus and the Sun from our point of view on Earth are farthest away. So that means that during her evening star phase, Venus is getting higher and higher in the sky because there's this distance between her and the sun. As the sun sets and dips below the horizon, Venus becomes this dazzling, brilliant star that if you just have a western view anywhere, look towards the western horizon between July and October of 2026 and you will see her, right? And then her cycle is ever evolving. And then she we will reach the retrograde and she will transition to morning star. But if you're listening to this during summer of 2026, go outside and look for Venus and be awed and amazed. And that is one of the most simplest but yet meaningful ways to begin embodying a relationship with Venus is by witnessing her in the night sky. And so she's this brightest celestial body after the sun and the moon. And

Stitching ourselves into the tapestry of human-star relations

SPEAKER_00

I've been talking about deep time, right? And planetary deep time. But also now let's weave humans into this relationship with Venus. So for millennia, again, humans have been around for 300,000 years. And again, I'm not an anthropologist, I'm not a historian, but we do have record of cultures and right, this is only written record that we have. So there is history, there is cultures and stories and relationships with Venus that we don't have any record of. But I just like to imagine that if we have record of cultures and humans having relationships with Venus as the planet, as the star, going back 6,000 years, then that extends well beyond that. And so if we just think about through the lens of deep time, through human deep time, hundreds of thousands of years, for millennia, cultures around the world have revered Venus and her mysterious cycle, this rising and falling is evening star, right? Where I said she's visible in the western sky at dusk, and morning star when she's visible in the eastern sky at dawn. That is a universal experience here on Earth. Anywhere on the world, again, maybe I should fact-check this, but I'm pretty sure anywhere on the world, around the world, whether you're in the northern hemisphere or the southern hemisphere, we can all see Venus. And all of our human ancestors have witnessed Venus and have revered her cycle. And so just to root this into a few different time points and cultures, so to the Akkadians, Venus was the goddess of fertility and warfare. Her name was Ishtar. To the Sumerians, the ancient Sumerians, the planet Venus is the goddess Inanna, the queen of heaven and earth. And to the ancient Greeks, her name was Aphrodite. And to the ancient Romans, her name was Venus. And that's where we get this. The name of the planet being Venus is rooted in this ancient Roman deity of Venus. And so, you know, in the Greek pantheon, she's the goddess of love and beauty. And in the Roman pantheon, she's, you know, love and beauty and more uh has war connotations as well. So this is another face of Venus, right? This other face of Venus is that she is this deity, she is this goddess who humans revere and respect and look up to and who they leave offerings, and there are priestesses, and there are whole cultural celebrations and traditions around Venus and her cycle. And so I always like to think about I like to say, like, how can we stitch ourselves back into the tapestry of human-star relations? Because this relationship between humans and stars and the cosmos is ancient, is thousands of years old. And if you are someone that loves to stargaze, that feels an opening in your heart when you look up and you see the full moon or the waxing crescent moon, or the first time that you see Venus and consciously No, that is Venus. My inner child always comes out when I'm stargazing. Just ask my partner. There are several times when we're driving, he's driving the car, and I just look out the window and I see Venus or the moon and I just go, the moon. Literally, this happens often. And I scare him. And then he's like, oh, it's just the moon. So that delight, that connection that we feel. And think of all of the human ancestors before us who also had that delight and connection with the stars and with the moon. How beautiful. So why don't we stitch ourselves back into that? Why don't we rekindle awe and enchantment and delight when we look up at the sky? And to me, there is no better planet, there is no better deity or celestial being to activate and awaken that enchantment and that awe and delight than Venus. And so that is why I adore her and I love her. There are so many reasons why I love her. But that is why this whole season of this podcast, the next 12 weeks, are devoted to Venus. And this is an invitation for you, dear listener, to deepen your relationship to Venus. And so if you're curious about your ancestors or about your specific cultures, I wanted to share something that I learned from the Polish folk witch. She has a Patreon and I was a patron for a while. And so I'll link her Patreon in the show notes if you want to learn more. And so the Polish folk witch, she teaches so much about Polish and Slavic folk magic. And she also has an amazing book that she recently published called Polish Folk Magic, which I have. And so what I learned from uh Joanna, the Polish folk witch, is that two our Slavic ancestors, Venus and the Sun, were known as the Zorias. And these Zorias are three sisters who symbolize dawn, midday, and dusk. And so each sister had a name. And I'm already going to apologize. I'm not great with Polish pronunciation. I'm trying to get better. So here are the names of the three Zorias. So Zudrenka is the Zoria of dawn, which was morning Star Venus. Vizornika is the Zoria of dusk, which was evening Star Venus. And then the third Zoria, the third sister, is the sun. And so to me, it is really beautiful that here I have this knowing, this piece of information that yes, my Slavic ancestors, my Polish ancestors, my motherline ancestors, I think of like Poland as my motherland because if I go back through my lineage, specifically through the motherline, you know, my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and all the way back, that's my like the land that these women come from before they came to America is Poland, or at least what, you know, so-called Poland as we call it today in colonial times. But I think of that as like, that is the land that my body comes from. And so I feel in my own ancestral practice, I have a deep, deep connection with my maternal and specifically my motherline ancestors. And so, in a lot of my own ancestral exploration, I really focus a lot of attention and energy on Slavic and Polish folk magic and folk tradition because that's my motherline. And I just feel this physical body connection of like, that's my motherland, and that is the land that I come from. And so to know that my ancestors had a connection with Venus and knew her as one of the three Zorias fills me with so much excitement and joy. And so, if you're curious about your ancestors, the cultures and the lands that they come from, do some research. Search online and find folks who know about your ancestors' relationships with Venus. And that is such a beautiful exploration and a really meaningful way to not only root yourself back into your lineage and a relationship with your ancestors, but also to stitch yourself back into the tapestry of human-star relations in a culturally relevant and resonant and significant way. So whether you're a budding or a seasoned Venus devotee, I really invite you, if you feel this connection with Venus, I really do feel like it is our birthright. Like I said, we can see Venus anywhere on this planet. And we all have a birthright to have this really meaningful relationship with her. And so if your curiosity, if your excitement, if your inspiration is being activated, hearing me talk about Venus, please go explore her. And please keep tuning in because, like I said, this whole season is devoted

The multidimensionality of Venus

SPEAKER_00

to her. And for the next 12 weeks, we will be exploring Venus's multidimensionality and her multifaceted nature. Because beyond being a planet and a deity and a goddess, I like to think of her. And honestly, I have already recorded all of the interviews for this season. And my understanding of Venus has just expanded tenfold. And it has been such an honor and a joy to ask some of my guests who have a direct relationship with Venus, who Venus is to them. And oh my goodness, their responses just like some of, of course, like there's just such resonance. Resonance is a Venusian experience. To feel that resonance, to feel that hum and that connection, that is a Venusian embodiment. And so some of my guests, um, which I'm not going to tell you who they are, you'll just have to stay tuned and listen because holy moly, do I have amazing guests this season. Um, one of my guests, which has just been ringing in my heart and I've just been repeating, is that Venus is the one who connects all things. I love that. She is the one who connects all things. Another guest said that Venus is the connecting principle and Venus is everything. Also agree. So she's so much more than a planet and a deity. She is a force of nature. She is a power that reverberates throughout the universe. And she is a divine force that we can commune with, relate to, pray to, and embody. And we can go outside and view her in the night sky and in the morning sky. So my hope and my intention is that this season you will go on this journey with me. You will arrive at the gates of Venus. This episode is called Welcome to the Gates of Venus, because with each episode, a different facet, a different gate to Venus will be opened, and a different side of her will be revealed, and we will have a deeper relationship with her as a result of that.

Why connect with Venus in these times?

SPEAKER_00

So we talked about who Venus is, but why? Like why Venus? You might be asking, well, why would we want to connect with Venus during a time of ecoside, during a time of genocide and rising fascism? And these are valid questions. And so, like I mentioned, Venus is our connection to all things. When we think about this miraculous, interdependent, interconnected web of life here in the living world on Earth and in the sentient cosmos, she is this connection that we have to all things. She is the antidote to hyper-individualism. She is the antidote to isolation. She is the connecting force. And she is also the creative force and creative acts in all forms. So I really think of these core embodiments of Venus as connective, as interdependent, as being a part of a web of life, and also as a creative act, that all of us are creative beings, and we can channel this creative life force through our bodies, through our voices, through our relationships, and we can channel Venus in our day-to-day lives. And to me, in a time of genocide and ecoside and rising fascism, we need the Venusian more than ever. We need to root deeper into our connections, our connections with one another, our connections with our neighbors, even if that neighbor has a completely different value and belief system than our own. We need each other more than ever. And we need to connect with like-hearted people, the people that nourish us, the people that we love, because those are the relationships that keep us going as we face more and more struggle in this time of the great turning. We need to connect beyond the human species. We need to connect with the earth. We need to connect with the land beneath our feet. We need to connect with the plants, with the trees, with our beyond human kin, the animals. They need us. They need us to really step into our role as human beings, which is to be stewards of this earth. We need to remember and awaken that we are stewards and that we are here to nourish and contribute and sustain life. Destruction, yes, we live in a world where there is an ever-changing cycle of life and death. However, we live in this unbalanced time where capitalist colonial forces are extracting and exploiting and destroying everything we love. And that is way out of whack and way out of balance and way beyond the natural cycle of life and death. We need to come back into balance. And that is remembering that humans are not the center of the universe. Humans, again, are the younger siblings of our insect and plant and planetary neighbors and ancestors. We are the younger siblings and we can connect with the earth and with the trees and with the beyond human beings to learn from them, to support them, to support their flourishing and their survival, because so many species are going extinct and it breaks my heart. So we need the Venusian because we need to connect, and we need to connect beyond the human species. Yes, we need to connect with our neighbors, with our communities, with our collaborators, with our loved ones, and we need to connect even wider. We need to connect with the living world and with the cosmos and with spirit and with ancestors because we need all of these relationships to help us not just survive collapse, but to flourish and to plant the seeds of the next world that we all know is possible and that we all know that we are here to create together. And so that leads to this other really big aspect of Venus, which is creativity, the ability to create in all forms. We need to honor and channel and practice and inspire and support this creative act in all of us, this creative life force. We need to dream, we need to imagine, we need to vision, and we need to create together with other humans. We need to create with the land spirits, we need to co-create with our ancestors, we need to create with the trees and with the rivers and with the oceans. We have to create because creation is how we sow the seeds for the new beautiful world we know is possible. We are all capable of stewarding and planting seeds, and every seed we plant is going to be so unique to each of us. How I plant and sow seeds for the next world will be very different to how you plant and sow seeds. And I trust that you have your unique gifts and your unique way of contributing to this world, and that is needed. And then the way that I create and the way that I sow seeds is also needed. And there is more than enough room for all of us to create and express and sow seeds because we need all of it, right? We know that things are only going to get more dire. There's only going to be more societal unrest, collapse, unease, degradation. And so we need all of us in our creative power coming together in community to co-create and to celebrate and uplift each other and say, I see you. I see you in your gifts and I support you. And you see me in mine and you support me. And then we come together and we share our gifts together and we create something more beautiful than either of us could ever create alone. And so that's my little sermon about why we need Venus. And that's not even getting into the aspects of Venus that are about pleasure and about delight and about the moments and the experiences that makes life so worth living. Because as we face struggle after struggle, what cultivates resilience is one community to connection and like a spiritual connection with the land and with a connection and with a force that is greater than ourselves, whether that is God or spirit or the universe or the divine, right? I do believe we need that to keep going. We also need pleasure and joy, my friends. And there is nothing wrong with experiencing pleasure and joy while we are also grappling with this nuance of there is so much suffering in the world. And at times we are greatly suffering as well. And so the resilience to suffering is community and connection and a belief in something larger than ourselves and a connection to something larger than ourselves, and the capacity for joy, the capacity for pleasure and like simple pleasures, the sweet moments of connection. And Venus nourishes and guides and supports all of this. So that is why. That is why Venus, just why Venus, that is why. That is why I'm devoted to her. That is why I am inviting all of you to deepen your connection with Venus and why we will have the next 12 weeks together to deepen and explore our kinship with Venus.

The Gates of Venus

SPEAKER_00

And so all of this is leading me to one final thing I want to share. So stay tuned in. I have so many incredible interviews to share with you. I am so, so excited and so grateful for all of the guests who said yes to coming on this show. I cannot wait to share them with you. And I have an offering that I am building up to. And later in the season, I'll share a little bit more, but I'll just give you a little teaser. So I am creating an offering called The Gates of Venus. And this is an offering that is a seven-week group program specifically for the artists, the dreamers, and the healers who are building a better world. And those of you who are really craving soul-aligned community and craving a space where you can connect deeply. So much deeper than surface level connections, but that you can be in a space and in a group container with other humans that you know get it, that you know are out here doing this deep soul work of figuring out why you incarnated at this time, what gifts you have, and why, and sharing those gifts to contribute to building a better world. And so the gates of Venus, this will all unfold during Venus's retrograde in Scorpio and Libra, which will be from October of 2026 and into November of 2026. And I invite you to be a part of it. So if you're interested, I have a wait list that you can join in the show notes. Join the Gates of Venus wait list, and this will be a program where we're showing up virtually once a week on Venus' night, of course, Monday evenings, and we will be together during the Venus retrograde. And I have so much to say about the Venus retrograde, and we'll be talking about Venus retrograde later in the season as we get closer. But for now, know that this is a seven-week group program to connect with other artists, dreamers, and healers, and to hold space and to serve as witnesses for one another and to be held and witnessed in community in return as we go through a deeply transformational experience, as we go through the underworld together, just like Inanna's descent into the underworld. That is what Venus Retrograde is Inana's descent into the underworld. And so, as a collective, as a community, those who feel called to this space, we will be journeying into the underworld together. We will be going so deep with Venus in our relationship with her, and our relationship with her cycle, and Venus retrograde in particular, which brings up so much. And we will have a safe community space to share, to witness, and to hold each other through that transformational underworld journey. And so, so much more to come about this offering. I am just so excited to birth it into the world and to invite you to join the wait list if you're like, yes, if you're feeling some resonance and you're like, yes, I want to go into the underworld. I want to be in a space with other radical world builders and artists and visionaries and dreamers and healers. And I want to deepen my relationship with Venus in community. I'm so excited to have you in this space. There is so much more to come. This episode is just a little teaser. So just join the wait list and more to come. But thank you, dear listener, for tuning in. It feels so good to be back behind the mic and connecting with you in this way. And I would love to hear how this is landing.
